Description: "Dear friend Arthur, Just a line from France wishing you the best of health, as I am myself enjoying. I would like to be driving around teh old island to-day if the weather is as good as here, but will not be long before we get back now I think" Written By Private H.L. Tibbets to Raymond Somes's father Arthur.
Description: Card. On the cover: “In Memory of Mrs. Addie B. Howard.” Inside is a poem by Mrs. I.M. Richardson, and one by I.M. Richardson. Written in Rockland, ME, December 16, 1891.
Description: Legs on bottom. Handle hinged at middle so toaster swivels and toast is done on both sides. Some rust. Donor info - brought to Somesville by Abraham Somes in 1761.
Description: Wooden cap nailed on each end. Marked G. Freeman 1770, H.G. Somes 1870. Donor info - this is the well known Somes Powder horn. Morris Somes was to be the next to sign.
Description: 1 Spanish real, minted 1774. Most likely in royal mint in Mexico City. Engraving reads "Carlos III, by the Grace of God King of Spain and the Indies." Sillhouette of Carlos III on front, royal coat of arms on back. Found in Hayward's garden, Beech Hill MDI in 1943.
Description: Tea pot sits on four legs resembling paws. Top red/pink flowers on each side. Spout (broken) has red/pink feathers on each side. Sides of tea pot have five green round flowers and leaves at top and three yellow flowers on each side. Ladder pattern extending from middle. Marked 581 on bottom. Said to be Caulport. Donor info - belonged to Mrs. Lucie Allen Somes. Brought over from Ireland. Over 100 years old at time of gift.
Description: Embroidered picture of the Rev. John Roger’s tomb under a willow tree in a dark wood frame with a gold border. Inscription of headstone reads, “ Died Oct 6th, 1782. Rev. John Rogers he is not dead but sleepeth”. Sewn by Sally Trask. On the back of the frame, “Given to me by my mother as a wedding present CFM”. See object file for more information. 1860
Description: Hand sewn saddle bags. Contained paper packages of medicine and old bottles. Belonged to Dr. Kendall Kittredge (1773-1857), first doctor on Mount Desert Island.
Description: Blue linen (?) sampler, approx. 10" x 12" done in 1806. Stitches are in red and yellow thread, but colors may have faded; red stitches remain most true. The fabric is faded and there are holes at the corners. Made by Judith Somes in 1806. She was born September 16, 1796, married Capt. Eben Babson Sept. 11, 1815, and died Nov. 4, 1880. She is buried in Brookside Cemetery.
Description: Used by Salem Town, surveyor, to survey Mount Desert Island. Compass Fleur-de-lîs to north and eagle to west. Marked in center, “Aaron Reed Boston”. (Did not see this marking, 10/23/2014, ACB)
Description: Patchwork and embroidered quilt. Embroidered inscription reads, "When this you see / Remember me/ Athalaney Fly/ Mouonldefort [Mount Desert]/ August 26, 1824/ Aged 7 years / 3 months." Athlaney was the daughter of Patty Somes Flye and James Flye; she died at the age of 18 and is buried in the Flye Cemetery in Tremont.
Description: Clock made by “Boardman and Wells - Forestville, Conn.”. Label inside glass shows eagle with “E Plurubus Unum”. Also marked, “Improved clocks manufactured and sold by Boardman and Wells, Bristol, Conn. Case Tiffany and Co, Printers - Hartford”. Label gives directions to set clock. Glass not original. Probably had reverse painting on glass. Clock face is painted on wood. White in center with strawberries. Gold in corners. “Pillars” carved on each side of clock. Dark wood. Missing weight. The works are still intact. Donor info- came from Gilley house on Baker’s Island. This house was built by William Gilley in 1812. Clock was given to donor by his grandmother, Phoebe Gilley Stanley. Description: Small (doll's sized) trunk adorned with animal fur and leather on the outside, lined with printed paper on the inside. A slip of paper on the inside reads: "This trunk was given to Emily Manchester by her father Major John Manchester, in 1850, (Now in the Gilley family)" Emily was born in 1834 and would have been 16 when she got the trunk. She was one of 10 children (from 2 wives). Fur on trunk needs to be identified: could be beaver, deer?? [show more]
