Description: Small (doll's sized) trunk adorned with animal fur and leather on the outside, lined with printed paper on the inside. A slip of paper on the inside reads: "This trunk was given to Emily Manchester by her father Major John Manchester, in 1850, (Now in the Gilley family)" Emily was born in 1834 and would have been 16 when she got the trunk. She was one of 10 children (from 2 wives). Fur on trunk needs to be identified: could be beaver, deer?? [show more]

Description: Horseshoe shaped hair wreath a memorial to Bethany Oakes Salisbury (according to Thomas Vining's work "Cemeteries of Cranberry Isles and Mount Desert Island Bethany E. Salisbury died 18 July 1886 aged 71 years, 8 months and 13 days and was the wife of Nathan Salisbury. The Oakes name may have been her maiden name and the "E." her maiden middle name initial), wife of Nathan Salisbury. Oval frame. Hair woven, tatted and braided in different colors. Pink ribbon painted around china leg. Dressed in mid-calf length dress of brown with white sprigs of flowers and triangles. Orange ribbon tied at waist. Pink ribbon at neck Wide lace collar. Description: Locks of people's hair arranged in a semi-circle on paper and sealed in oval frame. Names on paper attached to pieces of hair; Isaac Somes, C.F. Somes, George A. Somes, [C.F.] Thompson, Isaac Thompson, Lyman Somes and Frederick Thompson. From the Isaac Somes house in Somesville.
Description: Top lifts to reveal space for books and pencils. One drawer at top with white knob. Two doors with shelves behind. One drawer at bottom missing pull. Decorative cut base. Lender info - used by Lynam Smith during the 1850s when he was the teacher in the first school in Pretty Marsh, called "The Little Red Schoolhouse." Lyman Smith also taught in other area schools. Donor is a descendant of Smith.
Description: Letter written from the Custom House in Bath [Maine]; writer's name hard to read. Letter dated Nov. 6, 1851 responds to letter from Mr. Heath; indicates that a Capt. McMullin cleared [customs] the previous day and had asked the writer to give him the name of a person to whom he should send money. Writer apparently gave the wrong name (A.J. Clark of Southwest Harbor);it should have been Mr. Heath.
