Description: Reproduction of a map from Colby's Atlas of Hancock County (1881). Contains text descriptions of Mount Desert Island, Cranberry Isles and Mount Desert Rock with specific references to their locations in relation to Mount Desert Island, Maine. It shows, with lesser emphasis, the place names: Bar Harbor, SW Harbor, NE Harbor. Contains enlarged window showing Mount Desert Village (Somesville). Description of MDI mentions the incorporation in 1838 of "Seaville," a group of islands that included Bartlett's, Robinson's and Hardwood Islands in 1838. This incorporation was repealed in 1859. Description: Illustrated map of Mount Desert Island, re-print of 1932 by Valentine Tonone(?). Illustrations show mountains, hills, streams, roads, marshes, communities, and residences. Note reads, "Winding shores of narrow capes and isles which lie slumbering to Ocean’s lullaby.” 1 appears to be old/ original possibly 1932. size 20" X 20 " 2 copies, each appears to be a contemporary reprint.
Description: This is a photocopy of the earliest known map of the eastern part of Mount Desert Island. The map shows the 1807 survey by John Peters of the French land grant to the De Gregoires and the acreages then sold to settlers. The original is in the Bar Harbor Historical Society. Inscription: "A Plan of the French grant on Mount Desert the shore to the old settlers' lots from a Plan taken by John Peters Esq., the remainder of the Survey taken by me, John Peters, Blue Hill, 1807."
