A slip of paper on the inside reads: "This trunk was given to Emily Manchester by her father Major John Manchester, in 1850, (Now in the Gilley family)" Emily was born in 1834 and would have been 16 when she got the trunk. Description: Cased daguerreotype of Capt. Eben L. Higgins, sea captain of Mount Desert (1807-1900). Calling card of Mrs. Lester E. Pray is enclosed in the case. Note on back of card: "Picture of Capt. Eben L. Higgins, one of the well known Sea Captains of the island in former years." Captain Higgins was the husband of Hannah D. He died on December 28, 1900, at age 92 years, 9 months, and is buried in the Hamilton Station Cemetery in Bar Harbor. [show more]
