Description: This is a photocopy of the earliest known map of the eastern part of Mount Desert Island. The map shows the 1807 survey by John Peters of the French land grant to the De Gregoires and the acreages then sold to settlers. The original is in the Bar Harbor Historical Society. Inscription: "A Plan of the French grant on Mount Desert the shore to the old settlers' lots from a Plan taken by John Peters Esq., the remainder of the Survey taken by me, John Peters, Blue Hill, 1807." Description: Original map of the western part of Mount Desert Island as surveyed by Salem Town in 1808. Shows the original land holdings of earliest settlers. This map had been in the possession of the descendants of Abraham Somes, who came from Gloucester, MA in 1761 as the first permanent white settler on MDI. John Allen Somes (1872-1930) gave the original map to the Historical Society. It was probably one of the first gifts to the Society, which was founded in 1929. This record is a DVD which contains copies of the map in a digital format. If a printed image of these is made, it is suggested that the image be taken from the disc copy of the photos for higher resolution. It is possible that the image cataloged in Past Perfect database has been made smaller for storage purposes. [show more]
