Description:
This is a hardcover scrap book measuring 8 x 10 inches. The front cover is embossed with a raised picture with a parrot on a hanging ring, a cat, flowers and 2 borders. The trademark stamped on the inside front cover reads, "Mark Twain's Scrap Book, registered April 23rd, 1878" published by "Daniel Slote & Co." On the next page, is a faded inscription which reads in cursive, "Lucie F. Somes, Mount Desert, Maine, Nov. 1881". Next, there is a four -page index set up alphabetically with several entrees in cursive. Some examples of entrees are: Doctor and Judge 16; Boston Men Killed 5; Captain W. T. Ober 16; and Pillow lace making 18. The rest of this book is a compilation of newspaper clippings from many places. Several of the clippings have information which relates to the Somes family or of Mount Desert Island. For example, "Memorial Day at Somesville"; a column entitled, Then and Now (for the Mount Desert Herald) dated Nov. 2, 1885; and "Death of John W. Somes of Mount Desert".
