Ephemera: Framed poster inviting the citizens of Mount Desert to a Republican Rally in Otter Creek on Sept. 2nd. Speakers at the rally were T.R. Simonton, Esq. and A.P. Wiswell, Esq. Probably dates to the 1880s-1890s. Every line of type is different. Fine example of a typesetter's skill. A gift to the Historical Society in honor of Louisa Kennedy. Poster dimensions: approximately 13 1/4" wide by 20" in height.

Donor info - This is the last letter written by my grandfather Capt. John Francis Hodgdon. It was written to my father, Frank Leslie Hodgdon. Capt Hodgdon was lost with his ship the Theodore Dean off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina a few week later.

Certificate of ordination as Priest in the Episcopal Church, Diocese of California, for William Thomas Manning. December 12, 1891. Certificate is handwritten and bears the seal of the Diocese of California. Manning owned The Mount Desert House in Somesville, where he and his family summered. Manning later became Bishop of the Diocese of New York. From: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition | Date: 2008 | The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: William Thomas Manning 1866-1949, American Episcopal bishop of New York, b. England, received his collegiate and theological training at the Univ. of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. Ordained a priest (1891), he served parishes in California, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee and taught dogmatic theology at the Univ. of the South before becoming rector of Trinity parish, New York City, in 1908. Manning was bishop of New York from 1921 until his retirement in 1946. [show more]
